Seven hospital systems across Minnesota are in contract negotiations with the Minnesota Nurses Association (MNA), the union representing the approximately 15,000 nurses involved. The hospital systems include: (Metro area) Allina, Children’s Minnesota, Fairview, Methodist, North Memorial, and (Duluth/Twin Ports) St. Luke’s, Essentia.
Under Minnesota law, hospitals operate as non-profits and are required to reinvest any operational net proceeds in the community. The Minnesota Hospital Association’s most recent report (2023) shows that collectively, Minnesota’s hospitals contributed $6.2 billion in community benefits as defined by IRS guidelines. These investments extend far beyond hospital walls. They address the root causes of illness, expand access to care, and ensure that every Minnesotan, regardless of their ability to pay, receives the care they need. Our non-profit hospitals always put patients first.
In contract talks three years ago, the MNA rejected federal mediation for months and chose to strike instead, collectively costing hospitals tens of millions of dollars. A second strike was averted with the assistance of trained federal mediators.
Nurses in Minnesota regularly rank among the highest paid in the nation. In the 2022 contract talks, metro area MNA nurses received an 18 percent increase over three years, while Duluth/Twin Ports nurses received a 17 percent increase over three years. While there are minor differences at some of the negotiating tables, the metro hospitals have current wage offers at 6 or 7 percent over three years.
At some negotiating tables, MNA has yet to put forth full proposals as required under their contract. However, the hospitals will continue to bargain in good faith to reach a fair and reasonable agreement that prioritizes the needs of patients and our communities.
